Seven Ways to Practice Mindfulness When You’re Not Very Good at It

Mindfulness is good for us – that's what the research says.

Unfortunately, for some, it is really difficult.

I struggle with mindfulness practices like meditation. My brain won't switch off (of course, this means I need mindfulness more than most). Can you relate?

Headspace defines mindfulness as:

“the ability to be fully present in the moment”.

So, mindfulness doesn't have to be lying still and clearing your mind. It can be active as long as you try to focus on just one thing.

Here are some alternative mindful activities to try:

  1. Do a jigsaw puzzle.

  2. Lie in a hammock and look at the sky.

  3. Go wild swimming in a river or the sea.

  4. Take a walk – leave all technology at home.

  5. Listen to a fiction audiobook or radio play (just listen).

  6. Embroider, knit, crochet or sew. Any handmade craft can be mindful as long as you have learned the basics.

  7. Eat your favourite meal without the TV or radio and focus on the flavours and textures.
