Reading is a Workout for Your Brain

I’ve noticed I’ve not been reading books much lately.

It's not because I don’t want to, but because I’m filling my time with low-effort content consumption (quick scrolls and easy listens). That sort of content has a place, but when it starts replacing all my reading, it’s a sign I want to take notice of.

Reading is a workout for the brain. It improves my thinking, helps me focus, and strengthens my mental muscles.

So I’m making time for it again—not because I “should,” but because I feel the difference when I do.

Here’s my starting point:

  1. I’ve deleted social media and email apps from my phone (this is a temporary experiment).

  2. I’ve designated my car as an audiobook zone (leaving my runs and gym workouts for podcasts).

  3. I’ll review my book pile tonight (Kindle and audiobooks), ditch the books I’m not enjoying, and replace them with something I want to read. My Kindle will go on my pillow as a nudge to read before bed.
