Planning Versus Preparation

Here's something I am going to start experimenting with over the coming weeks: adding preparation time ahead of my deep work blocks on my calendar.

I’ve always been good at planning—I block time in my calendar for focused work. But sometimes, when the time comes, I realise I’m not quite ready to start. I need to find documents, gather notes, open tabs, and get in the right headspace.

That’s where preparation comes in.

  • Planning = blocking the time.

  • Preparation = getting everything ready beforehand so I can use the time well.

This idea clicked after watching a fantastic video by Naomi from Todoist (shared below).

I am curious: how do you approach planning and preparation?
