The Three Versions of Any Speech

Public speaking can feel daunting—especially when nerves take over.

And I'm not just talking about giving a formal speech. You might also be giving a work presentation, speaking up in a meeting, or in any situation where you need to communicate confidently. It can feel terrifying.

So, you plan. You practice. And yet, when the moment comes, the version you deliver never matches what you wrote. And later, you think of everything you wish you had said.

Sound familiar?

This happens to everyone.

I’m writing a course for new (and nervous) public speakers, and one of the best insights I’ve come across is from Allison Shapira. She highlights the three versions of any speech:

  • The version you write.

  • The version you deliver.

  • The version you wish you had delivered.

It’s easy to fixate on that last one, but the truth is—your audience isn’t looking for perfection. They want clarity and authenticity.

Having a plan and speaking with intention is what matters.
