Daily Routines Don’t Have to be Rigid

Two toggle switch illustrations side-by-side. The left switch is green and labelled “ON.” The right switch is red and labelled “OFF.” The doodle represents how people often think of routines in binary terms—either fully on or completely off.

We often treat daily routines like on/off switches. You’re either doing your routine perfectly every day, or you’ve fallen off completely.

But sustainable routines don’t work like that.

Start-up and shut-down routines are two of my favourite tools for setting boundaries. They’re like bookends to your workday—they help you transition from home to work (and vice versa) with intention.

I've talked with many people who understand the value of these routines, so they start their own... but can’t seem to make them stick. They begin with good intentions, but eventually, the routine becomes a drag. It feels rigid—like another item on the to-do list—so they abandon it.

That’s where flexibility comes in—daily routines aren’t all or nothing. Sometimes, your shut-down routine might take 30 seconds; other times, you might give yourself half an hour.

Both are valid. Both count. Both help you draw a line between work and rest, and it's the line that matters.
