How to Say No: Defer Your Decision

A phone screen illustration showing an incoming request, styled like a call screen. There are three options: green “YES” button, red “NO” button, and a third option labelled “DEFER” with a blue tick. The illustration is by Martine Ellis.

If you struggle to say no in the moment, try deferring your decision. Make this your default response:

"Let me check my calendar/task list and get back to you in [X time]."

This simple phrase gives you breathing room. It gives you space to check your actual workload and think about how you really want to respond without being put on the spot.

Saying no can be hard, especially if you’re tired or just trying to be helpful. Deferring your decision creates a pause. And in that pause, you can make a choice that protects your time, energy, and wellbeing.

Remember to honour the timeframe you set. Following through builds trust and shows that you’re thoughtful, not avoidant.

Try it next time a request lands unexpectedly.
