The Idea of “Balance” is Flawed

Our idea of "balance" (especially work/life balance) is flawed.

→ What we think balance looks like: equal slices, perfectly divided, all the time.

→ What balance actually looks like: constantly shifting priorities.

The key isn’t perfect symmetry—it’s sustainable flexibility. When one area needs more of your time and energy, something else will have to give a little. And that’s OK, as long as you adjust later to keep things sustainable overall.

It's important to remember this, though: you are the one constant in all of this. Every slice of your life pie chart—work, family, hobbies, rest—relies on your time and energy. If you’re running on empty, there’s nothing left to give to any of them.

So, when you think about balance, start with yourself. Prioritise your wellbeing and rest first. Without that foundation, no amount of juggling or rebalancing will work for long.

What’s one small way you can prioritise yourself today? Remember, your wellbeing is the foundation of everything else.
