The Power of a To-Don’t List

Psychologist and bestselling author Adam Grant keeps a to-don’t list—a list of habits, actions, and responsibilities he intentionally avoids. He includes things like mindlessly engaging with screens or putting work before family.

I love this idea.

At first glance, having a set of personal rules might feel restrictive, but perhaps it’s the opposite. Maybe it’s a way to create more freedom—less decision fatigue, fewer moments spent on autopilot, and more space for what matters.

I’m considering creating my own to-don’t list. Like my goals or word for the year, I think the key will be to keep it visible—somewhere I can see it often, as a gentle reminder of the things I’ve chosen to let go of.

Would you consider writing a to-don’t list? If so, what might you include?
