Wealth = Have ÷ Want
Lately, I’ve been thinking about wealth—not how to earn more, but how to feel wealthier.
That’s when I came across this equation:
WEALTH = HAVE ÷ WANT
It’s not a new idea, but I love how Derek Sivers explains it:
“If you have nothing, then focus on having some. Once you have some, the easiest way to increase your wealth is to decrease your needs.”
In other words, instead of looking for ways to have more, look for ways to want less.
I’ll be honest: I already have too much stuff. How could I possibly want more?
And it’s not just about material things or financial wealth.
Sahil Bloom’s new book, Five Types of Wealth, introduces the idea that wealth isn’t just about money—it also includes time, social, mental, and physical wealth. (I’ve just started reading and will report back; I’m especially interested in the time wealth chapter.)
What do you think of the equation? Does it resonate with you?
